Techniques for Better Classroom Control

Student behaviors like shouting, not paying attention, avoiding work, disrespect can take your focus away from teaching and other students’ focus away from learning. The following classroom management strategies can be used to help maintain student focus and create student consistency around class expectations:

Be Transparent

Communicating your expectations, rules and goals of the class clearly which make the students aware of what is expected of them and there is no confusion as to what students may or may not touch. You can also ask them what they wish their classroom looked like and try to accommodate some of those requests, this will make you gain students’ respect and trust because they see you are taking them into consideration.

Monitoring

Do not just stand at the front of the class or sit down on the chair for the entire period. You have to walk around so the students keep their focus on you where you will be next and it is also easier to correct errors on the spot than to find them later during the monitoring is done.

Offer Praise

Praise students for jobs well done, as doing so improves academic and behavioral performance that can motivate students to repeat positive behavior and encouraging them to strive for better results.

Do Something Different

Change the format of the lesson plan sometimes. While structure is important, it is also important to keep lessons interesting to maintaining students’ interest. You can have students lead out in some of the activities such as playing games, sing a song or studying outdoors.

Modelling

Behave the way you want your students to behave, such as dressing appropriately, being on time, prepared, having a good attitude, polite, enthusiasm for learning, paying attention, active listening, consideration for others etc. The students will be mirroring you.
